Benched Bear

I’M BACK. A quick life update: I haven’t consumed ice cream in WEEKS. Unbelievable, I know. 18 credit hours really takes up some time, let me tell ya. Update over, let’s get to it.

This past week my friend Valentyn (see below) and I went to The Baked Bear in Delmar Loop. I’ve been wanting to try this place for awhile, but honestly I felt super overwhelmed just looking at the website.

I asked him if he wanted a picture with the bear. He said, “I’ll go home to Ukraine and take a picture with a real bear.”
He also told me he would sue me for this picture. Ukrainians are tough.

You have to choose if you want a brownie or cookie (or one of each if ya wanna get wild). Then what kind of cookie you want. Choose an ice cream flavor, toppings, and if you want it HOT (we’ll get to that later).

I chose cookies – chocolate chip and salted peanut butter chocolate, berry crumble ice cream, sprinkles, and warmed up. Valentyn got brownies, butter brittle ice cream, hot fudge, warmed up. You go through the process of choosing and tasting and then they ask… “would you like this warmed up?”

I’m not sure why this question really caught us off guard, but… actually no, that’s a question that should catch you off guard. Why would I want my ice cream warm? Did I mention that they warm them up in what I can only guess is a waffle maker?

Even with my cookies (and ice cream) warmed, I still couldn’t eat it like an ice cream sandwich. I ate my ice cream with a spoon and then tried to fork my messy cookies (it didn’t end well). Valentyn’s wasn’t as bad because his wasn’t supposed to be a sandwich anyway.

Another negative was the price. Mine was cheaper because I chose cookies- which is silly because brownies are so much easier to make. For my cookie “sandwich” I paid about $7, I also felt pressured to add a $1 tip. Valentyn paid a dollar more because he was ~fancy~ and got brownies.

Some positives are that the ice cream I got was actually super delicious. They also gave me a perfect amount of sprinkles. They gave us about four scoops of ice cream- it was a lot. I don’t recommend eating dinner before, just eat this instead.

OVERALL REVIEW: Great ice cream, not the most edible idea. Worth a stop if you’re in the area, but not worth a long trip.

Here are some comments Valentyn left for the blog:

“Chocolately.”

“The atmosphere is really nice- lots of bright colors.”

“I didn’t see any bears, but the way they baked my ice cream was pretty intimidating. Therefore, I would give them a solid 8/20. I didn’t expect them to ask, “do you want your ice cream hot?”

“Share with a friend if you’re not up for a big snack.”
